Canning With Mormons

Canning With Mormons

I recently went canning with the LDS church.  The LDS church has about 108 volunteer canning facilities worldwide and most of these are in the United States.

Why Can With the LDS Church

Your food will cost you about half the price of buying canned food elsewhere.  The facility is run by volunteer missionaries that are not paid.  If you talk to some food storage sales people, they will tell you that they can’t compete on price with the LDS church.  The reason is that the LDS church does it as a free service because they believe in the merits of making it affordable.

Can Non Members Can at the Facility

Non members are encouraged to come.  In each congregation or ward, there is a person assigned to be over the canning needs.  You should call the local bishop if you don’t know who the person is.  You can look it up in the phone book or call LDS church headquarters.  They set aside a time for canning every three months or so.  The canning specialist will ask you to fill out an order form.  You can email it to them or send it to their home. The order must be filled out before a deadline.

Two Rules of the Cannery

There are two rules at the cannery.

1- You must participate in the process.  That means you must show up on canning day and work with everyone.  It will probably take you two or three hours to complete all the orders.

2- You can not resale the product.  It is for your family to use and that’s it.

Seasonal Items

Canned items change periodically.  For example, a favorite for people is to get chicken chunks.  However, it isn’t offered every time you go there.  You may want to ask the ward specialist about these seasonal items.

Safety Procedures

You will sign in and be required to watch a short safety video prior to canning.  The video will cover things like where the exits are and where the eyewash and first aid stations are.  You will also be required to wear a hair net or beard net (if you have one).
