Grocery Stores: Finding The Lowest Prices
One study we did compared Albertsons grocery chain with Smiths grocery chain. We took a random list of items to compare at each store. Each store priced their individual products slightly different. For example, peanut butter may be slightly higher at Albertsons and toilet paper cheaper at Smiths.
The results were rather surprising. Our statistical analysis showed that there is absolutely no net price difference betwen these two stores. What can we conclude from this study.
Stores change pricing on individual items to encourage customers to come to their store. If a store has a really good sale on hot dogs, then the bun and ketchup prices may be higher than average. The way to get the best deals is to track the prices for each item purchased and at what store. If you are willing to shop at several stores, and track pricing, you will be able to signifantly save money. Shoppers that think they have discovered a cheaper store are often misled.
